Wildcats finish second in the West

(Matthew Tonis)
The Lee boys’ tennis team poses with its runner-up trophy after its finals loss.

SPRINGFIELD — This season, the Lee boys’ tennis team was not expecting to be a tournament team. With an experienced roster, this season looked like it could be a year of building toward the future for coach John Perry, but what came out of it was a trophy and expectations for years to come.

Lee’s season came to an end Tuesday afternoon, as the Wildcats fell 4-1 to Belchertown in the Division III West final, their first trip to the sectional final since falling to Mt. Greylock in 2013.

Belchertown had been to the sectional final each of the previous four years, but had never hoisted the trophy in any of them. Following the match, Perry acknowledged the talent across the court, saying he wished the result had gone the other way, but he was happy that if anyone beat his team, he was glad it was Belchertown.
