SHEFFIELD — A two-story home was decimated over the weekend when flames engulfed the property at 1028 South Undermountain Road.

Sheffield Fire Chief David Ullrich said there were no injuries as a result of the fire and that the unidentified homeowners were on vacation out of the country at the time of the incident.

Ullrich said the department received a call altering them of the blaze at approximately 11 p.m. on Sunday, March 15.

A motorist passing by the house spotted the fire and called the Sheffield department when he arrived in Egremont and was able to get cell phone service.

The Sheffield Fire Department received mutual aid from the Great Barrington and Egremont fire departments in fighting the conflagration on Sunday night.

The department also received additional water tankers from the North Canaan and Lakeville fire departments in northern Connecticut.

“The water in that area of Sheffield is pretty slim,” Ullrich said. “We were able to establish a water source about a quarter mile away probably about an hour into the fire. We were able to get a good source of water going then, but initially we were utilizing tankers.”
