Spartans swimming splits with PHS

PITTSFIELD — It came down to the final race, but the Monument Mountain Spartans boys’ swim team came up short in the final swim meet before Berkshire Individuals meet at Simon’s Rock that will be held this Saturday.

The Generals defeated the Spartans 50-44 after the quartet of Conner Hayford, Matt Miller, Conor Mooney and Liam Mooney won the 400 yard freestyle relay over Ethan Dean, Harry Albert, Jack Glantz and Nick Dillon to preserve the victory.

“This has been a very different season than it has been in the past as you can imagine, but I am no less proud as I’ve ever have been of my team,” said Monument Mountain head coach, Jill Svirida.

“I am thrilled that they have been able to do as well and rise up to the occasion and be able to compete against these strong teams that have always been strong. Today, I have no complaints.”

After Conor Mooney tied the meet at 38 all, winning the 100 yard backstroke, it appeared that the Spartans had retaken the lead with a last second win by Hayden Stein in the 100 yard breaststroke. However, Stein was DQ’d for touching the wall with just one hand, giving the victory to Miller and PHS.

“I’m bummed that we had a DQ in the breaststroke obviously because we could have used those points. [Stein] had a beautiful race and it just didn’t end in his favor,” said Svirida.

The girls on the other hand continued their dominance, easily cruising past Pittsfield by a score of 66-28.
