SBRSD School Committee votes on schools

SHEFFIELD — The Southern Berkshire Regional School Committee has voted in favor of pursuing the closure of the Monterey School and the South Egremont Village School.

In an open meeting Wednesday night, the committee voted 6-2 in favor of the action with the Monterey School. Members Mary Ellen Brown of Monterey and Carl Stewart of Alford voted no. The committee then voted 7-1 for the same action with South Egremont Village School. Marcella Bush of Egremont was the single no.

Committee members Genis Melendez-Delaney and David Travis were absent from the meeting.

The vote sets in motion the long path for closing the two schoolhouses in accordance the SBRSD’s founding agreement.
