Residents petition for vote on marijuana moratorium

MILL RIVER— With the state set to begin receiving license applications for recreational marijuana establishments on April 1 and one special permit application for a marijuana business already submitted to the town, a grassroots effort to put a moratorium on such applications has arisen.

Calling itself the Concerned Citizens of New Marlborough, this group of residents gathered the signatures of 264 registered voters—about 26 percent of the town’s voting population—in three days in order to deliver a petition requesting the select board to hold a special town meeting vote on the moratorium. Another petition supporting the Concerned Citizens’ efforts was signed by 75 second-homeowners in New Marlborough, according to the group’s leaders.

“For us it is about giving the town time, a strategy and a voice,” Deanna Mummert said while standing outside of the New Marlborough Meeting House on Monday afternoon, waiting to collect the final signatures on the petition.
