Pipeline protester’s defense asks for police transmissions, policies

GREAT BARRINGTON — The legal defense for a Kinder Morgan pipeline protester facing criminal charges has filed a motion asking for 15 categories of information from the prosecution and investigators, including radio transmissions between police officers, transmissions between security officers, and the Taser policy of the police department.

Jake Renner, of Sharon, Conn., was charged on Nov. 1, 2017, with two counts of assault and battery of a police officer, disorderly conduct, resisting arrest and trespassing. Renner was at a protest near the headquarters of Tennessee Gas Pipeline Company in Sandisfield. Nearly 100 people have been arrested in connection to similar protests in the area; most had their charges either dismissed or downgraded to civil suits. Renner is the first to face criminal charges in court.

A report by State Trooper John T. Stec says Renner fled after he was told he was under arrest for trespassing, then Renner shoved two officers before falling to the ground and struggling with one of the officers. Stec said he tased Renner in the lower left side and buttocks.
