LEE — Newly-hired Lee Superintendent Michael Richard was so eager to get to work in his new district that he arranged to move his starting date in Lee up one week.

The current superintendent of West Springfield Public Schools was originally scheduled to start in Lee on Monday, March 2, but after working out an arrangement with his current district to wrap up his duties there, Richard’s first day in Lee is now slated for Monday, Feb. 24.

Richard spent the day at Lee Middle and High School on Tuesday, Feb. 11, familiarizing himself with the student body and district staff.

“I’m ready to hit the ground running on the 24th,” he said. “Hopefully I’ll be able to spend some afternoons here next week during vacation week.”

After being hired by the Union 29 committee on Wednesday, Jan. 22, Richard attended his first Lee School Committee meeting on Feb. 11 at the High School Library.

For the past six years, Richard has overseen a 10-school district in West Springfield. The possibility of working in a more intimate district propelled him to apply for the Lee job, he said.
