Mill River Store’s proprietor warns of uncertain future

MILL RIVER — Lack of support from financial institutions could threaten the existence of one of the Berkshires’ longest standing businesses and one of the area’s last remaining general stores.

Built in 1840, the Mill River General Store has been a popular breakfast and lunch destination for locals, as well as serving as a local post office for residents of New Marlborough.

Jessica Holcomb, current proprietor of the Mill River General Store, located at 10 Great Barrington Road, says that, in general, small town general store businesses are dying in part because of big box stores, and the lack of financial support.
