MassDOT group begins Berkshires-NYC rail study

By Cory Willey

LENOX — Members of a state working group met Tuesday for its inaugural public meeting to discuss the challenges and possible options for a Berkshire County to New York City rail service.

The group was created through an amendment drafted by state Sen. Adam Hinds, D-Pittsfield, and was endorsed by the senate in May.

The amendment tasked the Massachusetts Department of Transportation with convening the group by Oct. 1. The group was to discuss the economic and cultural benefits and possible political, legal or logistical challenges of creating a seasonal weekend passenger rail line linking Pittsfield and New York City.

The group has until March 1, 2018 – per the amendment – to gather data and information before submitting its findings.
