Liquor store seeks new location next to a playground

By Cory Willey

LEE — A local liquor store owner is taking steps to move his business to The Rink.

The select board approved Berkshire Liquors Inc., owner David Ryel’s application for a change of location from 33 Canal St. to 130 Housatonic St. following a public hearing Tuesday night. With the board’s approval, Ryel will now submit his application for approval by the state’s Alcoholic Beverage Control Commission.

Should he receive the state’s approval, Ryel will then come back to the planning and select boards for approval.

The liquor store’s potential proximity to the Lee Athletic Field at the rear of the property has raised concern amongst some in town, though, as Select Board Chairman David Consolati explained to one resident during the hearing, nothing in the town’s zoning laws prevent such a move.
