Millionaires take control of South

LENOX — At halftime of the first meeting between the Lenox and Lee girls’ basketball teams on January 23, the 3-6 Millionaires trailed the Wildcats 40-28 entering the fourth quarter. With their backs against the walls both in the game and their season, the Millionaires knew something would have to change in order for their season to turn around.

Lenox would go on to win that game 53-47 and change the course of its season. That win began a seven-game win streak for the Millionaires, which they took into their senior night rematch with the Wildcats Thursday night.

“They refuse to lose,” Lenox coach Nicole Patella said. “That’s the mentality that kind of trickles down to the rest of the team.”

Thursday would not be the time for losing either, as Lenox took down its rival 49-44, taking hold of the Berkshire South in the process. Senior Kat Nichols led all scorers with 18 points on the night, including a 3-pointer with under three minutes remaining that would prove to be the winning basket.

In the month between the first matchup between the teams and the second, Nichols saw the Millionaires come together in a way they had not been before and compete for 32 minutes each night.

“Our intensity picked up and we started playing full games instead of just one or two quarters,” Nichols said. “We play from the start, we play as a team and we’ve just been working hard and working as a whole.”
