In the fourth quarter of a lopsided game Thursday, Gwen Carpenter stepped to the line for a pair of free throws. A rather innocuous moment in an otherwise forgettable mid-January game will be a something that lasts far beyond.
With the Mt. Everett Eagles trailing the Wahconah Warriors 44-31 with 5:19 remaining in the game, Carpenter stepped to the free throw line for a pair. She had a chance to hit the mark from the same stripe earlier, but missed both attempts, a rarity for her.
Again, she stepped to the line. Clank.
With those in attendance waiting anxiously, the guard buried her fourth attempt at history, scoring her 1,789th career point, putting her alone atop the list of scorers in Mt. Everett basketball history.
