FormerAusten Riggs employee accused of embezzling $25,000

GREAT BARRINGTON — The former director of finance of the Austen Riggs Center is accused of charging nearly $25,000 of personal expenses to her corporate credit card over the course of a year.

Elizabeth Hakes, a Lanesborough resident, will appear before the Berkshire County Superior Court in Pittsfield for a pretrial on Sept. 19.
She was indicted and arraigned earlier this week in the Southern Berkshire District Court, where the charges were dismissed on request of the District Attorney’s office so that they could be brought forward in the higher court.

This isn’t the first time Hakes has been accused of making fraudulent charges to a company credit card, though. Similar charges were brought against her by her former employer, MassHire Berkshire Career Center in Pittsfield, formerly Berkshire Works, where she worked from July 2015 until August 2017, according to her LinkedIn page.
