GREAT BARRINGTON— The battle against cancer is one the Gardino family has never waged alone.
And as the Lee family gears up for the annual Relay for Life of Berkshire County alongside the 130 other participants, the Gardinos are working hard to make sure that others throughout the county aren’t alone in their fight.
Terrie Gardino, matriarch of the family, was diagnosed with thyroid cancer in 2006. After successfully combating the cancer and looking for a way to give back, she told her husband, Ray Gardino, that she wanted to be involved in Relay for Life. The community-based fundraising event raises money for the American Cancer Society to fund research, lodging for those affected by cancer and screenings.
Each year, more than 5,000 Relay for Life events take place in more than 20 countries, according to the American Cancer Society.
“Nowadays, everyone knows someone with cancer. There’s nothing better than knowing that what you do makes a difference in someone’s battle,” said Ray.
