The Berkshire Hills Regional School District plans to ask its neighbors in the Southern Berkshire Regional School District to form a joint planning board to weigh the possibility of consolidating—a suggestion that blindsided Southern Berkshire school officials and has some of them feeling “peeved,” said Peter Dillon, superintendent of Berkshire Hills.
The Berkshire Hills school committee, which unanimously passed the motion at their regular meeting last Thursday, will ask that Southern Berkshire respond to their request by July 31.
Frustrations about the unexpected request boiled over Tuesday evening at the Southern Berkshire Education Futures Committee meeting between representatives from the four school districts in South County.
At the meeting, Southern Berkshire school committee chairperson Jane Burke accused Dillon and the Berkshire Hills school committee of going back on a previous agreement between the two districts to keep discussions about consolidation off the table.
