Berkshire Hills proposes $279,000 in reductions FY19 school budget

GREAT BARRINGTON — At a March 1 public budget hearing, the Berkshire Hills Regional School District School Committee voted 8-1 to accept an updated budget proposal with changes to revenue and cuts that ultimately amount to a $279,000 reduction from earlier proposals for fiscal year 2019.

The most prominent cuts include omitting a new, extra late bus for the middle and high school, reducing money allocated for high school maintenance and not hiring a new paraprofessional staff member for the middle school. The school also found some additional revenue from enrollment numbers and renegotiations of tuition agreements with other districts.

“While I never like to make reductions, I think the administrative team and the principals decided on a range of things that are able to reduce the burden on our tax-paying citizens in ways that are not particularly impactful on education,” superintendent Peter Dillon said.
