Water bottle ban kicks in Nov. 1

GREAT BARRINGTON— In nearly a month from now, the town will begin implementing enforcement on a bylaw that was first approved last year.
Starting Nov. 1, the town’s ban on the sale of single-use plastic water bottles, one liter or less, will go into full effect.
Much like the plastic-bag ban, the town’s health department will be tasked with enforcement, said Great Barrington Town Manager Mark Pruhenski.
As such, merchants have been notified by the town via a 30-day notice, allowing them to phase out the products.
“We expect that all merchants in town who have not already done so will be in full compliance by Nov. 1 as our town seeks to reduce the generation of plastic waste,” said Pruhenski in a statement. “We’ve created and will distribute informational signs for merchants to place in their stores’ water sale sections, if they wish. We hope this will help inform customers wondering about the absence of single-use plastic water bottles on store shelves.”
