Treasure hunt at the ‘Flying Church’

(Hannah Shirley) Residents were given metal detectors on July 7 to search for artifacts at the Flying Church parking lot. One resident discovered a gilt button, pictured above.

GREAT BARRINGTON — The parking lot of the town’s oldest church has been undisturbed for more than 100 years…until now.

With major construction completed on the former Methodist church at 198 Main St., developer Paul Joffe invited the public to hunt for local history in the lot before it’s paved over. Despite soaring temperatures and rainstorms in the forecast, more than a dozen residents were given metal detectors Saturday afternoon to see what they might find in the old lot.

Residents were invited to keep whatever artifacts they found, on the condition that they posed for a photo and recorded the discovery.
