WESTFIELD — Trailing by three points with under two minutes remaining in the first half, the Lee football team was in position to seize a lead heading into halftime or at least reorganize in striking distance during the break.

But two Jimmy Purcell interceptions in the final two minutes of the second quarter led to 16 points for St. Bernard’s, who benefitted from that momentum en route to a 44-14 win over the Wildcats, advancing to the state championship game for the second consecutive season.

Coming out of the gates, though, Lee looked to be up to the challenge of taking on the defending state champions.
