LENOX — For much of the Junior American Legion schedule, Sheffield Post 340 ran roughshod over its competition. But after a lopsided loss at the hands of East Longmeadow Wednesday set up a do-or-die final of the double-elimination district tournament.
With home-field advantage on its side, Sheffield cruised past East Longmeadow this time, winning 9-2 and sending the program, in its first year back in action since 2014, to the state tournament.
Having lost 15-0 the day before to the same team, Post 340 knew it had to make some adjustments, with coach Tom Fielding saying that his group did not play as clean of a game as he’s seen from them all summer long.
Over the course of the five-inning contest the day prior, Sheffield did not make it through the order two full times, the first such time the offense was limited to such a degree all summer.
But with a chance at the state tournament on the line, Post 340 made sure not to let it happen again.
