GREENFIELD — Late in the fourth quarter of its game against Greenfield Friday night, the Monument Mountain football team faced a daunting task; a 99-yard field. With time ticking on the game and the season, the Spartans set for themselves a simple goal as the offense took the field.

“I said to the guys, ‘You know what, let’s get down there and score a touchdown. That’s our goal for today,’” coach Dennis Martin said. “They wanted it. They showed me that they’re going to play hard right up until the end.”

Kicked off by a 64-yard run from senior running back Jack O’Brien in his final regular season game in the maroon and white, Monument did just that, ending the drive with a three-yard burst from the back to strike pay dirt as the game clock expired.

While the touchdown did not do much to change the outcome of the 30-14 win for the Greenfield Green Wave over the Spartans, it did show their coach what the team was made of.

“It was a tremendous effort by a young team,” Martin said. “I’m really proud of them.”
