Eagles shut out Gateway
By G. Spencer Osborne WESTFIELD — It could simply be said that Mt. Everett’s baseball team scored three runs in the third inning of its Division 3 regional semifinal contest against Gateway Regional, survived a rain delay and a change of venue, used two pitchers to maintain a shutout and earn a 3-0 win to claim its season-high seventh straight victory and move on to the title round for the first time in the 21st century. Not so fast.

Millionaire boys win D3 regional crown;
By G. Spencer Osborne
WESTFIELD — Lenox Memorial’s boys’ soccer team returned to the Division 3 regional championship round for the third straight year after earning a 3-0 victory over Pioneer Valley Regional on Nov. 13 on the Westfield State College football field.
The Millionaires took matters one step further than in 2008, winning the regional flag after Sunday’s 3-0 victory over Gateway Regional.
The decisions marked the first time the Millionaires have won four straight games and only the second time in 2009 that they have won consecutive games.
Against Pioneer, the first 32 1/2 minutes saw both teams battling each other with enthusiasm for loose balls, but it was the defenses of both sides that played best.
Lenox forced Panther goalkeeper Joe Larson to make four saves in that span, while his counterpart, junior Andrew Bravo, made one in that period. The Millionaires, however, mounted four challenges on top of their threats before the scoring bell was rung..

Monument golfers get last in state linkfest
By G. Spencer Osborne SUTTON — Here are a few facts about Tuesday’s Division 2 state championship golf tournament at Blackstone National Golf Club. Of the 13 teams in the field, Monument Mountain finished last with a 343. Wahconah, the Spartans’ only neighbor in the field, took 12th with a 338 in a match won by Duxbury (313). In a match that saw Joe Harney of West Roxbury-based Catholic Memorial win the individual title by shooting par (72), senior Scott Kravitz and junior Barrett Ramsay shot 9-over-par 81 to lead Monument. Behind them were teammates Mike Krenicki (90), Jonathan Obanhein (91), Luke Harrigan (101) and Devin Lamke (106). And now it’s time to feel the state tournament experience as recalled by some of the Spartans involved.

Millionaires get third straight victory
SHEFFIELD — Persistence in trying to score and staying close to the opponent’s goal paid off for Lenox Memorial’s varsity girls’ soccer team in its Monday afternoon rematch with Mt. Everett in the form of a 1-0 triumph over the hometown Eagles. The decision gave the Millionaires (8-6-2), who shut out Drury 1-0 on Oct. 22 in North Adams, their third straight victory. The Eagles, who fell 6-0 to Hoosac Valley in Cheshire on Oct. 22, started a three-game home stand that ended with Wednesday’s afternoon contest with Drury. “Everett played a little better than last time,” said Lenox head coach Matt Cote in reference to the Millionaires 6-0 win

Streak goes on for undefeated Wildcat sextet
By G. Spencer Osborne LEE — Lee High’s varsity volleyball team stayed undefeated through 15 matches this season after three match triumphs in the last seven days. The Wildcats, who have lost just four games all season, swept Pittsfield 3-0 on Oct. 14 before dropping their latest in a 3-1 match victory (25-20, 26-28, 25-5, 25-20) over Mt. Greylock in Williamstown on Oct. 16 behind senior front-liner Julia Warner’s 21-kill, 10-ace, 10-assist show and eight-ace efforts from teammates Sam Daoust (seven kills) and Ashley Raftery. Then Lee reverted to form, sweeping visiting Mt. Everett 3-0 in Monday’s rematch. Lee claimed a 25-14 win in the first game because the Wildcats were persistent enough with their volleys that they didn’t allow the Eagles (3-11) to score more than two consecutive points throughout.

Millionaires record victories
By G. Spencer Osborne LENOX — Lenox Memorial’s varsity girls’ soccer team scored three goals in each half and played virtually air-tight defense in posting a 6-0 win over visiting Mt. Everett Tuesday night. Both teams entered the contest having recorded their initial victories of the season in their previous outings. The Millionaires rallied from a 1-0 haltime deficit with three second-half goals to knock off Drury 3-1 at home on Sept. 18. On Sept. 19, the Eagles, two days after suffering a n4-0 home-field loss to Hoosac Valley traveled to Hunter, N.Y., and notched a 3-1 victory over Windham in the first round of the Hunter-Tannersville Tournament. On Saturday, Sept. 26, the Eagles are slated to return to Hunter for the upper Catskill tournament’s championship round. But under the Lenox Memorial Middle and High School lights on Tuesday, it was all Millionaires, and they started showing it in the first half.

Spartan boys blank Lee
By G. Spencer Osborne
GREAT BARRINGTON — It was Opening Day fo rthe Lee High varsity boys’ soccer team. For the host Monument Mountain Spartans, it was their home opener.
Wednesday’s encounter was a study in offensive frustration for both teams. But in the second half, the Spartans ended that frustration with goals that came early and late to record a 2-0 victory.
Lee goalkeeper Sean Hickey was tested early, making two saves in the first 10 minutes and being saved when a Monument kick that got out of his reach hit the left post of the north goal and bounced away at the 26:22 mark. Three more saves by Hickey, one save by Monument goalie Kiernan O’Malley, three challenge shots by the Spartans and a Monument goal negated by an offsides penalty kept the game scoreless at halftime
