GREAT BARRINGTON — The future home of the Berkshire Co-op Market is expected to be open for business in early spring as construction for the first phase of $30 million Powerhouse Square development on downtown Bridge Street nears completion.
The co-op’s new location will be the first time that a space was designed for the business, said Jill Maldonado, marketing manager for the co-op. The 38-year-old organization was first housed in a converted barn on Rosseter Street in Great Barrington.
“It wasn’t long before we needed to expand and we’ve been in our current space for about 14 years,” she said. “We went from doing $2 million a year to now about $8.5 million a year and are bursting at the seams. We cannot grow [any more] without having a larger space.”
The expansion will almost double size of the co-op’s current space of 7,100 square feet to 13,900 square feet. The community-owned business has approximately 3,500 people from Massachusetts, Connecticut and New York that own a share of the organization.
