SHEFFIELD — A 70-year-old Connecticut man was killed Wednesday afternoon when his motorcycle was struck by a truck going the opposite direction.
Kristopher Laine, 39, of Southfield, was travelling eastbound near 199 Canaan Road around 3 p.m. when his pick-up truck departed his lane and struck the motorcycle operated by John Howard of Bethleham, Connecticut, a spokesperson for the Berkshire County District Attorney’s office confirmed. Howard died at the scene.
Numerous police departments and other first responders responded to the accident. Laine was arrested on charges of motor vehicle homicide by operating under the influence; and unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle. Laine was also issued a citation for a marked lanes violation.
He was booked at the Sheffield Police Department, where his bail was set at $1,000 by the court clerk. He was released after payment of the bail.
Laine was scheduled to be arraigned at the Southern Berkshire District Court Thursday morning, but did not appear. Family members who attended the proceedings on his behalf told the judge he was not present because he had sought medical treatment. The arraignment was continued until June 6.
The criminal investigation into the accident is ongoing, according to the District Attorney’s office.
