GREAT BARRINGTON — In an advisory, non-binding vote, residents voted in support of the potential renaming of Monument Valley Regional Middle School to W.E.B. Du Bois Regional Middle School.
The vote on the first night of two-night annual town meeting, however, wasn’t without discussion. In fact, more than a dozen people came forward to speak on the matter — the majority of which were in favor of the decision.
Among those that spoke in support of the name-change were board members and volunteers from Multicultural BRIDGE, a Lee-based organization dedicated to catalyzing change and integration through the promotion of mutual respect and understanding.
Earlier this year, the town held a month-long festival that culminated on what would have been Du Bois’ 150th birthday, said Dr. Lara Setti, chair of the board of directors for Multicultural BRIDGE. A number of conversations were spurred throughout the celebration of Du Bois’ life, she said.
