GREAT BARRINGTON — As urgent concerns for the future of a protected town resource surfaced, the selectboard determined it was time to close the road that had impacted that ecosystem.
In a 4-1 vote, members of Great Barrington Selectboard opted to close Lake Mansfield Road to vehicular traffic between the boat launch and the beach during the board’s Monday meeting. Stephen Bannon, chair of the board, voted against the complete road closure, noting that he would prefer to see the road become a one-way.
Understanding that area residents would still need to be granted access, the town plans on granting limited exceptions for those area residents, those seeking emergency access and those seeking entrance to and from the pool club, said Chris Rembold, town planner. A recreation path will also need to be established as part of the road closure.
