EGREMONT — Great Barrington Patrolman Jason LaForest has been named Egremont’s new police chief pending contract negotiations.

He will begin serving as the town’s latest police chief t on July 1, becoming the town’s third police chief.

The Police Chief Search Committee members present at last week’s select board meeting all said the same thing: Jason LaForest is unequivocally the man for the job.

LaForest will replace current chief Erik Josephson, who was hired last April. In November, Josephson announced he would not renew his contract when it expired June 30. The announcement came after months of friction between him and the select board and allegations of interpersonal conflicts within the police department, both of which were aired in a public disciplinary hearing in January.

LaForest declined to be interviewed until after he meets with Egremont town officials next week.
