‘Armed attacker’ is subject of training drill at Fairview

GREAT BARRINGTON — Police, fire and EMS
agencies from throughout Southern Berkshire County responded to three
emergencies at Fairview
Hospital over the past

And while the urgency was real, the threat
was not.

The local emergency response organizations
participated in an emergency preparedness exercise as a way to test and improve
the response in the event of a real mass casualty incident, said Heather
Barbieri, director of emergency management at Fairview Hospital.

More than 100 people from organizations in
Great Barrington, Sheffield, Egremont, New Marlborough, Lenox, Pittsfield, Stockbridge and Blandford, as
well as first responders from Southern Berkshire Volunteer Ambulance Squad,
participated in the exercise.

Planning for the drill began in January and
continued with several tabletop exercises to help get everything on the same
page, said Barbieri. Practicing the violent scenarios was a first for the
hospital, she added.

“It was a great learning opportunity for all disciplines involved,” she said.
