Jon Bruno appointed to vacant seat on Southern Berkshire School panel

SHEFFIELD — Jon Bruno has been appointed to the Southern Berkshire Regional School District’s school committee.

Bruno was officially appointed to fill the final open seat  by the appointing body  that consisted of two of the select board members from Sheffield and the three school committee members from Sheffield.

The committee comprised David Smith, chairman of the select board, and board member Nadine Hawver. The school committee representatives were E. Bonnie Silvers, Dennis Sears, and Art Batacchi.

This was not the first time this particular appointing committee met, however. On Tuesday, Dec. 4, the committee met and initially decided not to appoint Bruno. Smith and Hawver voted in favor of Bruno, but the three school committee members voted against him.

Art Batacchi, who initially voted against appointing Bruno and wanted to wait and see if any other applicants were interested, changed his vote and broke rank to vote the same as the select board members. The final vote was in Bruno’s favor with Smith, Hawver, and Batacchi voting for him, and Sears and Silvers dissenting.
