MARLBOROUGH—Everything that manager Brian Shepardson’s team needed to go right, did go right for them as the Berkshire 11s won their second straight Cal Ripken state title in a rematch of last year’s 10U age group title game.
“Last year, there were only three really good players that carried us, but this year it has been different,” said Shepardson comparing the two seasons. “This season, everyone has contributed. It’s somebody different coming up with a big hit or play everyday.”
In the championship game Monday night it was Caleb Petrezullo who went 4-4 and made a key defensive play to keep the game tied at 5-5.
“When Caleb threw the guy out at first on that lined shot to right to keep the game tied, that was a big momentum boost for us and swung the momentum back in our favor,” said Shepardson.
Berkshire held a 5-2 lead heading into the fifth but Marlborough climbed their way back to tie the game up at five and had taken the momentum. But Petrezullo’s play gave swung all that momentum back into Berkshire’s favor.
They responded by scoring seven runs in the top of the 6th to break the game open as everybody contributed in the frame including an RBI single by Jason Jarros.
