Lenox Planning Board considers Housatonic St. solar development

LENOX — The Planning Board met Tuesday with representatives from Syncarpha Capital, a New York-based firm specializing in solar power, to consider the possibility of creating an overlay district to accommodate a $10-million, 7 megawatt solar project.

The site in question is a 48-acre lot off of Housatonic Street by Mountain View Cemetery. 25 acres would be used for solar development. The development, according to figures provided by Syncarpha Capital, would provide over $150,000 in savings annually, split between the municipality, residents and businesses.

However, it will not be a simple process to get the project rolling. The problem lies in issues with zoning. The lot in question falls in a residential zone, though questions arose whether the lot should have been rezoned for industrial use.
