GREAT BARRINGTON – The legacy of native civil rights icon W.E.B. Du Bois will be officially recognized in town hall in the weeks to come.
On Oct. 17, Carol Connare, of the W.E.B. Du Bois Center at UMass Amherst, presented a framed, high-quality print of Du Bois’ birth certificate to Selectman Ed Abrahams and a throng of excited onlookers.
Connare also presented a framed family photo of Du Bois, his wife Nina and their firstborn child, Burghardt. That photo was taken in Phildelphia, Connare explained, while Du Bois was writing “The Philadelphia Negro,” a book of sociological study.
Burghardt Gomer Du Bois died of untreated Diphtheria shortly after the photo was taken.
