AMHERST – The Wildcats dream season came to an end Saturday morning as the Quaboag Cougars (17-6), led by senior Emma Stanton who made six three pointers en route to a career high 27 points in the Cougars 56-28 win over the Lee Wildcats (18-5) in the girls Division IV Western Mass Finals.
The win gave the Cougars their fourth straight Western Mass title. This last one being extra special as this is the final season for Quaboag head coach Clifford Lanier who is retiring at the end of the year.
“In the first one four years ago, you probably saw me jump up and down if you were watching when the game was over. Today, as soon as the game was over, my thought was ‘Okay, who is our next opponent? Time to get ready for them,” said Lanier, although he acknowledges that every Western Mass title is “fabulous.”
The Wildcats got off to a solid start in the first quarter trailing 15-12 after the first eight minutes of play, despite missing two of their starters as Brianna Hawley and Mikayla DeSantis were out due to foot injury and illness. The game soon quickly got out of hand as the Cougars went on a 16-3 run in the second quarter to go up 31-15 at halftime.
